Viet Thanh Nguyen in Conversation about To Save and to Destroy

3:15 PM - 4:00 PM

Sunday, November 9

State Theatre (719 Congress Ave., Austin, TX 78701)

The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Sympathizer, Viet Thanh Nguyen, discusses his deeply personal and provocative essay collection, To Save and Destroy: Writing as an Other. In an exploration of what it means to write from the margins, Nguyen reflects on his lived experience as a child refugee from Vietnam as well as the literary, historical, and political dimensions of otherness. A bold meditation on the power — and burden — of giving voice to the voiceless, Nguyen interrogates the role of the writer in times of violence, the responsibilities of fiction, and the possibility of solidarity across borders and communities.
