Books are mirrors when readers see their own lives reflected in the story, and windows when they allow readers a view of lives and stories that are different from their own. These three books celebrate different cultures and traditions, providing both mirrors and windows for young readers. I'll See You in Ijebu by Bunmi Emenanjo tells the story of 8-year-old Olu visiting her mother’s family in Ijebu, Nigeria, as they observe the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha. We Who Produce Pearls: An Anthem for Asian America by Joanna Ho is a book in verse celebrating the diversity, strength, and beauty of the Asian American community. A Maleta Full of Treasures by Natalia Sylvester describes a child’s anticipation of abuela’s visit and what treasures she might bring from nuestra tierra, the family’s homeland in Peru.
