Climate change, capitalism, a shifting political landscape. Recent years have left us grappling with the state of the world, grasping at small joys, love, and an imagined future to keep us grounded and hopeful. In Julie Poole's Gorgeous Freak, the speaker traverses on foot through the changing seasons of Austin, Texas. Rendered through letters written between 2016 – 2017, Poole's book is quietly vivid and visually intimate. Sasha West's How to Abandon Ship looks forward and back, wading through ancient myth and worldly tragedies to shift perspective and urge us to make change. In this reading and discussion, join Austin writers Poole and West as they consider our connections to the climate, past and future figures, and the trajectory of narrative amidst political instability in our environments natural and man-made.
