How We Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2025

January 20, 2025

This Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we honor the legacy of a leader (and writer) whose vision of equality and justice continues to inspire us all. Whether you brave the cold or stay warm indoors, here are two meaningful ways to celebrate:

Austin MLK March, Festival, and Food Drive

Bundle up and head outside to participate in the Austin MLK March, Festival, and Food Drive. This annual event kicks off with a spirited march and culminates in a festival celebrating Dr. King’s message of unity and hope. Don’t forget to bring nonperishable food items to contribute to the city-wide food collection, supporting families in need. If the chilly weather keeps you indoors, receptacles for nonperishable food will be available at both the Capitol and the MLK Day Festival at Huston-Tillotson University (at both the beginning and end of the march). The March will start at the south steps of the Capitol at 9:30 on January 21, 2025.

      Watch Genius: MLK/X

For those who prefer to stay cozy indoors, stream National Geographic’s NAACP Image Award-winning and Emmy-nominated series Genius: MLK/X on Prime. Based on Dr. Peniel Joseph’s (TBF Board Member) groundbreaking book The Sword and the Shield: The Revolutionary Lives of Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr., the series provides a compelling look at the lives, philosophies, and shared fight for justice by two of the most iconic figures in American history. Whether you march in solidarity or learn from the warmth of your living room, celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a chance to reflect on his enduring legacy and contribute to a better tomorrow.
