What I work on
I have the privilege of overseeing Texas Book Festival’s Reading Rock Stars, Real Reads, and Library Grants programs through which we are able to increase access to books for children and adults across the state. As a former teacher, Reading Rock Stars and Real Reads are especially close to my heart. I put a lot of care into the events I plan and strive to give students memorable experiences with authors and books they can relate to and others that provide glimpses into less familiar worlds. I also work closely with Hannah, Anna, and our committee to put together an exciting lineup of children’s and young adult programs for the Festival each year.
Why I work here
The Texas Book Festival has been my family’s favorite Austin event for many years. Our first time attending was when my daughter and her first grade classmates were invited to introduce an author in the Read Me A Story tent, a venue I now help to program. When I discovered there was a role at TBF that perfectly aligned with my experience and growing desire to find a job focused on books and reading, it felt like it was meant to be. The cherry on top is that I get to do this work with a talented and fun team.
My education and experience
I’m a two-time graduate of Texas State University and hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in Spanish and a master’s degree in education with a concentration in reading. Before starting my dream job at TBF in 2021, I worked in public education for 18 years, including 11 years as a classroom teacher. I also worked at the district level in Austin ISD where I managed their student teaching program, led in-person and online professional learning, supported new teachers, and co-planned and facilitated large events.
More about me
You can typically find me hanging out with my husband, daughter, and pup, who we adopted from the Austin Humane Society Puppy Bowl. I love going to the movies and checking out local restaurants and bookstores. I’m a mediocre but enthusiastic plant mom.
