Dr. Phillip Townsend has co-curated significant exhibitions such as Notes on Sugar: The Work of María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Like the Lonely Traveler: Video Works by María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Charles White: Celebrating the Gordon Gift. His scholarly contributions span peer-reviewed journals and essays for exhibition catalogs, including notable works for CAA, UT Press, and Getty Publications. He is currently the Curator of Art at the Art Galleries at Black Studies (AGBS) at The University of Texas at Austin, where has curated impactful exhibitions like Wura-Natasha Ogunji: earth, body, spirit and Melvin Edwards: WIRE(D) + CHAIN(ED), the latter showcasing the work of Houston native and African American art and sculpture pioneer Melvin Edwards. His recent exhibitions include Michael A. Booker: Wave Patterns, Alicia Henry: (un)knowing, Nicole Awai: In the thick of it, and Rashaun Rucker: Patron Saints of a Black Boy, highlighting his commitment to showcasing rigorous and diverse artistic voices.
