A former educator and long-time Texas resident, Cynthia Levinson writes award-winning, mostly nonfiction books for readers ages four through teenagers, focusing on social justice. Her latest picture book, Free to Learn: How Alfredo Lopez Fought for the Right to go to School, illustrated by Mirelle Ortega, tells the story of the Lopez family who courageously sued the Tyler (Texas) Independent School District to make sure that Alfredo—and all children—could go to school, whether or not they are documented. Her other books include The Youngest Marcher (NAACP Image Award finalist), The People’s Painter (Robert J. Sibert Medal), and, with her husband, Sanford Levinson, Fault Lines in the Constitution (a best book of the year).
