Each Festival honors a Texas author with its Bookend Award in recognition of a lifetime of contributions to Texas literature. The 2007 recipients are Dagoberto Gilb and Rolando Hinojosa-Smith. Former honorees include Sandra Cisneros, Mary Margaret Farabee, Larry L. King, Walt McDonald, T. R. Fehrenbach, Horton Foote, William H. Goetzmann, John Graves, A. C. Greene, Shelby Hearon, Elmer Kelton, Stanley Marcus, Cormac McCarthy, Américo Paredes, Louis Sachar, Edwin "Bud" Shrake, Texas Monthly magazine (publisher Mike Levy; editors William Broyles, Gregory Curtis, and Evan Smith), and Bill Wittliff.

	Steven G. Kellman Steven G. Kellman is the author of Redemption: The Life of Henry Roth, The Translingual Imagination, The Plague: Fiction and Resistance, Loving Reading: Erotics of the Text, and The Self Begetting Novel. A contributing writer for The Texas Observer and the San Antonio Current, Kellman was awarded first place in arts criticism in 2006 by the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies. He served two terms as a director of the National Book Critics Circle and was recipient of the NBCC's 2007 Nona Balakian Citation for Excellence in Reviewing. A member of the Texas Institute of Letters and founding president of the literary center Gemini Ink, Kellman has taught at universities in Minnesota, California, Israel, and Bulgaria and is currently a professor of comparative literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

	Sarah Cortez Houston cop and author Sarah Cortez brought together 36 Latinos to share their life experiences in Windows into My World: Latino Youth Write Their Lives, a collection that documents young writers' experiences with friendship, death, anorexia, divorce, and sexuality: all the stuff of life is in this book. One writer, Marisol Leon, discusses the conflict with her family created by her desire to study at Yale. "I remember tía Olivia calling the house to let me know that I was betraying my family by leaving to study," Marisol writes, "But unlike both of my parents, I wasn't leaving the country to let years pass before seeing my family again; and unlike my mother, I wasn't leaving to get married." On top of issues facing all youths today, these writers deal with those struggles unique to their ethnicity: adjusting to a different culture and living up to their familial and cultural expectations.
