 Robert Rummel-Hudson
When Robert Rummel-Hudson's daughter Schuyler was born, he thought he was ready for the challenges of fatherhood. But nothing could prepare him to meet the invisible monster inside her that rendered her incapable of speech. In Schuyler's Monster: A Father's Journey with His Wordless Daughter, Rummel-Hudson details his family's often dispiriting journey through a host of incorrect diagnoses, unsympathetic school districts, and the marital discord special-needs parenthood can induce. Facing depression and anxiety, Rummel-Hudson is forced to overcome his fears in order to become the father his daughter so desperately needs. As the family's quest for answers leads to surprising breakthroughs, Schuyler's bold and unflinching personality begins to come through loud and clear in spite of her inability to speak. Rummel-Hudson chronicled his life with Schuyler in a popular blog before writing Schuyler's Monster, eventually raising $10,000 needed for an electronic speech device. The Rummel-Hudsons now live in Plano, where Schuyler attends classes specifically for children using Augmentative Alternative Communication devices. Schuyler's Monster is a "love-letter," as the author puts it, from a father to a daughter; as Neal Pollack of Alternadad.com explains, Schuyler's Monster reveals "how parenthood can turn ordinary people into passionate advocates."
