Diana Lopez at the 2009 Texas Book Festival

Diana Lopez

López's first children's novel Confetti Girl is written through the eyes of Apalonia Flores, a young girl just starting junior high. Apalonia lost her mother a year ago and is now struggling not only with the pains of junior high, but also with a father who would rather read books than deal with reality. Add to this her mischievous best friend Vanessa, and Vanessa's single, "man-hating" mother and Confetti Girl offers a sometimes humorous, always heartfelt glimpse into a young girl's world. Lopez brings the reader back to a time when dances are magical, kissing is a big deal, and winning that high school volleyball game is the only game that matters. The author integrates the Latino traditions of cascarones, hollowed egg shells filled with confetti, and dichos, Spanish proverbs, to create an uplifting tale for readers 8-12. López is also the author of the adult novella Sofia's Saints. Her short stories have appeared in Chicago Quarterly Review, Sycamore Review, and New Texas Journal. She has been featured on NPR's Latino USA and is the 2004 winner of the Alfredo Cisneros Del Moral Award.
