 Elaine Scott
2010 was the year when all eyes were on Chile. On August 5, 33 men were buried alive after a mine collapsed around them. Buried 2,300 feet underground, the men spent 17 days before word came that all 33 of them were alive. With the whole world watching the saga in the ensuing months, the uncertainty of the men’s fates deepened. In Buried Alive!: How 33 Miners Survived 69 Days Deep Under the Chilean Desert, children’s writer Elaine Scott captures the raw sentiment and helplessness that the miners, their families, and the rescuers felt with an ease and flow of words that grasps readers of any age, though the book is intended for readers aged nine and up. Scott takes the reader step-by-step on what led to the collapse, the rescue mission, and the miraculous outcome. Readers ride this rollercoaster of emotions with every word printed on the page. Scott, born and raised in Dallas, is an acclaimed children’s author, with many books under her belt. She is the mother to two daughters and a parade of dogs. She appeared at the 2011 Festival for her book Space, Stars, and the Beginning of Time: What the Hubble Telescope Saw. She currently lives in Houston.
